HeartVision

What is Calcium Scoring?

InnerVision's Multi-detector CT scanner can obtain "freeze-frame" images of the heart. By using this rapid scan speed and sophisticated computer software programs, our HeartVision scan can measure calcium deposits in your coronary arteries, the arteries that provide blood flow to your heart. Calcification in your coronary arteries is a marker for blockages in the arteries, which can lead to heart disease and even a heart attack. Your calcium score is calculated and compared to other men or women of your age and compared to the general population, giving you an idea of your risk for heart disease.

Who Should Have A HeartVision Scan?

InnerVision recommends that individuals talk to their doctor about whether or not calcium scoring is right for them. Some individuals, including those who have had heart bypass surgery or who are over 70 years old, will not benefit from calcium scoring. Also, people having symptoms of heart disease (such as chest pain, chest pressure or tightness, pain radiating into their arms, or shortness of breath with exertion) should not have a test such as HeartVision. These symptoms may indicate a serious heart problem and you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.

People who may benefit from this test include those individuals with risk factors for heart disease. Risk factors for heart disease include:

  • Family history of heart disease or stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Being overweight
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Sedentary life-style
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking history

Additionally, any individual over 40 years of age, even those without risk factors, may want to consider coronary artery calcium scoring.

What Does the Test Involve?

HeartVision uses Multi-detector CT scan technology to obtain a series of pictures of your heart. This test does not involve the use of any x-ray dye. You will not need to change your clothes. The exam is painless and your total appointment time will be less than thirty minutes. You will get to see the pictures taken of your heart at the time of your exam and a letter explaining your results will be mailed to you with 24 hours. InnerVision also strongly recommends that a copy of your exam results be sent to your doctor.

If your test is abnormal and you do not have a doctor, an InnerVision radiologist can recommend a board certified cardiologist who can help you make the right decisions about what to do next.
