About Us

Our staff is exclusively focused on helping patients on the healing journey after being diagnosed with cancer.

Lafayette Cancer Care is no ordinary oncology clinic. We have staff from the East coast, West coast, and Midwest. Lafayette Cancer Care has become the crossroad for us and has brought us together. Though our reasons vary for coming to Lafayette, Indiana and more specifically Lafayette Cancer Care, we have become a team with patient and family care being our main focus. Our staff members are easy to identify with as we have people in varying stages of life. We have the newly married, parents with young children, soon to be empty nesters, grandparents, and adult children taking care of their aging parents. This diversity has helped our patients bond with members of our staff in a very unique and special way and has allowed them to feel comfortable and confident in their level of care.

Every patient receives our undivided attention and devotion to their care. You will witness this first hand when you come in for your initial consultation. We strive to get a complete medical history. We review your records thoroughly and come up with a treatment plan of action that will work best for you. When you arrive in our office, we will spend approximately an hour and a half reviewing the natural history of your particular cancer and treatment options available. We will give you and your family an opportunity to ask questions. You will find that a member of our staff will give you a hug before you leave assuring you that you are not alone.

Our Philosophy

When faced with cancer, you want the most advanced care available. At the same time, you want your care to be delivered in a comfortable setting by kind and compassionate people. We understand the challenges you and your family face during this uncertain time, and our friendly and caring staff are each dedicated to delivering your personalized care with the compassion you deserve.

Our philosophy is to care for the whole person, not just to fight the disease.

We not only help the patient understand and select the best treatment option, but we also understand the personal struggle that each patient and family is experiencing. Each day, we witness ordinary people facing the extraordinary challenges of cancer. Each day we witness people living fully in spite of having cancer.  As a result, we see some amazing moments of inspiration, grace, and strength. We do whatever we can to empower patients and caregivers, and to be a source of personal strength in their battle to defeat cancer.

Leading-Edge Therapies

Cancer care has made many advances in the last decade. Chemotherapy has been refined to more accurately attack cancer cells. This makes the side effects more tolerable than those of first and second-generation chemotherapy drugs. Cancer care has moved beyond pure use of chemotherapy that attacks cancer cells as a chemical poison. Advances from research allow oncologists to control tumors with hormonal therapy and even at the cellular regenerational level. Additionally, expanded technology has fueled vast improvements in effective use of radiation therapy. Every year, the amount of information about cancer compounds – and as it does our staff studies and adopts the latest treatments that offer more hope for effective treatment of numerous cancers.

Day by day, cancer care is improved and augmented by intensive research that takes place worldwide. Therapies used today were only imagined a decade ago. Likewise, today, new therapies are being discovered and researched in hopes of more effective and curative results.

The Journey

No one can possibly prepare for the moment when you are told, "You have cancer."  Those words shatter your existence as you knew it, and you are abruptly brought face to face with your own mortality. We at Lafayette Cancer Care believe that as you explore the medical options to help rid your body of cancer, there are other aspects that will need tending in order for you to heal: your mind, your emotions, and your spirit. For the body to optimize its chances of becoming well and staying well, your other aspects must be brought into balance. We will take our time with you. We will foster hope. We will help you to grapple with the difficult questions by giving you our loving, undivided attention. We will guide you so that you can do the best you can with what you have been handed. Your task will be to hang on and survive the initial upheaval the word "cancer" causes. How do you do that, you ask? You breathe and you cling to your faith, your family, and your friends. You don't quit. You educate yourself about your options. You pray.  You make lifestyle changes. You get good advice. You march down the path with others at your side. You won't be alone. Isn't that how we survive any difficult challenge life sends our way?

Our History

Dr. Nancy DiMartino came to the Lafayette area in 1996 to pursue her dream of providing cancer care that incorporates the whole person, helping her patients to achieve balance of body, mind, emotion, and spirit.

Dr. DiMartino is a graduate of Cornell University, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in 1975, and the New Jersey College of Medicine, where she received her medical degree in 1979. She is triple board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology. After completing her medical training at Tuffs-New England Medical Center in 1982, Dr. DiMartino was appointed assistant professor of medicine at Boston University's School of Medicine and spent the early part of her career teaching and pursuing research at the Boston VA Medical Center.  She was appointed chief of the hematology-oncology section at the VA Medical Center in 1992 but left her academic practice in 1996 to return to full-time patient care here in Indiana.

Her team at Lafayette Cancer Care has a patient-centered approach with the patient actively involved in decision-making. Lafayette Cancer Care provides a peaceful, uplifting environment conducive to wellness.

Dr. DiMartino also encourages her patients to participate in their own healing. "Each person's healing program is uniquely tailored to what they think they need and what I perceive they need. No one wants his or her efforts to participate in their own healing to be dismissed."
